Bayern Munich learn extent of Manuel Neuer injury ahead of Arsenal clash

The veteran goalkeeper had to pull out of the Germany squad for this month’s international friendlies due to a torn muscle fibre.

There were fears around the Bayern camp he would miss an extended period, but Germany head coach Julian Nagelsmann – who has turned to Barcelona’s Marc-Andre ter Stegen in his place while Neuer is injured – revealed the issue is not as serious as first thought.

“It’s just a muscle fibre tear, he won’t be out for eight months,” Nagelsmann said.

“I don’t change my opinion. I told Marc that I’m thankful to have him. Now, he has the chance to be there. But that doesn’t change my decision. Manuel will be out for 10 days.”

Though Neuer will likely recover in time to face Arsenal away on April 9, he could miss two Bundesliga matches before Bayern’s trip to north London.

Thomas Tuchel’s side return to action at home to rivals Borussia Dortmund on March 30 before travelling to Heidenheim on April 6. Bayern sit 10 points behind Bundesliga leaders Bayer Leverkusen with only eight rounds of fixtures remaining.

Bayern are also sweating over the fitness of star striker Harry Kane, who sustained an ankle injury when colliding with the post in their recent 5-2 win at Darmstadt. He joined up with the England squad but did not partake in training and has since been released back to his club to continue his rehabilitation.

Right-back Sacha Boey, who only joined Bayern from Galatasaray in January, is too at risk of missing the first leg against Arsenal due to a hip problem, though the versatile Raphael Guerreiro has rejoined training.
