Premier League
Who wins Premier League if teams finish level on points AND goal difference?
Arsenal are top of the Premier League with 71 points from 31 games. Though Liverpool have just as many after drawing with Man United at Old Trafford, they are only second, with Man City being third at 70 points.
The Gunners are leading Liverpool courtesy of a better goal difference — plus 51 versus plus 42 (Man City have plus 40
But what happens if two teams finish level on points with an equal goal difference? Much as it sounds unlikely, let’s consult the rules.
If clubs finish with the same number of points, their position in the Premier League standings is 1) determined by goal difference, 2) then the number of goals scored, 3) then the team who collected the most points in the head-to-head matches, 4) and then who scored most away goals in the head-to-head.
So if Arsenal finish level on points and goal difference with Liverpool or Man City, it’s the number of goals scored that comes into play. Currently, Arsenal have scored 75 goals, Liverpool 72 and Man City 71.
If it comes down to the head-to-head clashes, it’s still Arsenal who prevail — the Gunners have taken 4 points from the head-to-head clashes against their direct rivals.
As you can see, Mikel Arteta’s men are statistically favoured in this race in terms of goals difference, goals scored, and head-to-head clashes. However, the Gooners would definitely rather their team won it on points to avoid the nerves of doing maths!
