Real Madrid ‘reach verbal agreement’ to sign Alphonso Davies from Bayern Munich
Los Blancos have been courting Davies for much of the season so far and view him as one of their priority transfer targets alongside PSG’s Kylian Mbappe. The Canadian’s contract at the Allianz Arena runs until the summer of 2025 but talks have not progressed over a new deal.
Reports from Germany last week stated Bayern were becoming increasingly accepting that they may need to sell Davies in the summer 2024 window in order to recoup a fee and avoid losing him for free a year later.
Now, The Athletic write that Madrid have agreed with Davies he will be signed over the next two summer windows.
Madrid’s efforts have been led by chief scout Juni Calafat and director general Jose Angel Sanchez, who have asked Davies not to renew his contract at Bayern to make the process of a transfer smoother.
Davies is also wanted by clubs from the Premier League and there has also been ‘preliminary interest’ from Barcelona, but ultimately his preference is to join Madrid.
Bayern have not held talks with Madrid regarding Davies and would still prefer him to sign a new contract, but they will look to sell him if no breakthrough in talks has been reached by the summer. The situation has been compared to Madrid’s capture of Toni Kroos from the Bavarians back in 2014, with the midfielder heading to the Santiago Bernabeu on a cut-price deal due to his contract situation.
Davies has made 180 senior appearances for Bayern since his 2018 move from Canadian MLS side Vancouver Whitecaps, cementing his status as one of the world’s best left-backs.
