N’Golo Kante sent off for dangerous challenge on former Chelsea teammate as midfielder sees red for only second time ever

The French World Cup winner was sent off for only the second time in his career for a dangerous tackle on Kalidou Koulibaly.

The former Blues teammates both departed Stamford Bridge for Saudi Arabia last summer.

They then took to the pitch on opposite sides on Tuesday, with Kante’s Al Ittihad side facing Koulibaly’s Al Hilal in the Asian Champions League.

Kante’s team were 2-0 down when the Frenchman was shown his marching orders for a challenge on the defender after 66 minutes.

The midfielder initially avoided severe punishment but was dismissed for only the second time in his career following a VAR decision.

Kante did not pick up a single red card during his Premier League tenure at both Leicester City and then Chelsea.

The 32-year-old also has an unblemished disciplinary record for his country, with his only other red card coming earlier in his career.

Just two years after turning professional, Kante was sent off for Caen during a 1-0 defeat to Stade Rennais in 2014.

Kante has since avoided replicating the feat in the decade since, with his ‘good reputation’ being suggested as saving him on certain occasions.

His humble nature made him such a hit in England, but his Saudi Arabian side now face a fight without him to overturn their deficit without him.

Goals from former Fulham striker Aleksandr Mitrovic and Salem Aldawsari mean Al Ittihad have it all to do in the reverse leg.

Last year’s Saudi Pro League champions sit in fifth this year, with Al Hilal leading their closest challengers – Cristiano Ronaldo’s Al Nassr – by nine points.
